The need for a Health and Wellness Center….
Northern Uganda is recovering from more than 20 years of war between the government and the notorious rebel group, the Lords Resistance Army led by Joseph Kony. This war led to many deaths, child abductions and a population displaced with no place to call home.
As communities struggle to regain a sense of home, there is urgent need for services to help the population rebuild their lives. Fitness For Africa has pledged to provide a Level III Health and Wellness center in Gulu where it will serve a population of more than 30,000 people.
Uganda’s healthcare system still faces a great challenge with its health indicators lagging behind those of the rest of the world. The mortality rate for infants at birth is a staggering 5.4% and an even more staggering mortality rate of 9.9% for children under the age of 5. These indicators are just a small part of the inefficiencies that spread throughout the health care system and why Fitness for Africa is taking action.
In the past, Uganda was praised for successfully bringing the prevalence of HIV down but recent research is showing an upward trend from 6.4% in 2005 to 7.3% in 2011. Malaria still claims more than 300 children’s lives everyday despite the efforts of government and other factors to bring it down.
Pearl of Hope Hope Health and Wellness Center in Lela Obaro Village, 30 kms outside of Gulu will provide healthcare, nutrition counseling, wellness education and dental care that will enable families to live a healthy and more productive life.
Fitness for Africa has generously been given land for the home of Pearl of Hope: Health and Wellness Center and has begun the first steps of providing new life to the area by planting a tree that signifies the beginning of new development and hope for the future. The first bricks have been prepared by local people within the community and with each new day the dream of our viable health and wellness center gets closer and closer to reality.
